Draft — review with a lawyer before launch
Mama’s Makin’ Moves is an editorial publication about mothers who build businesses. We collect as little as we need to run the site, publish stories and send our newsletter. This page explains what that is, why we keep it, and how to ask us to change or delete it.
1. What we collect
We only collect information you choose to send us, plus the basic technical information every web server receives.
Newsletter signups
Your email address and, if you choose to share them, your role and city. We also record when you signed up (as a record of your consent), and the IP address and browser user agent the signup came from, so we can spot abuse and show when and how consent was given.
Nominations
When you nominate someone, we collect the nominee’s name and, if you provide it, her email address; your own name and email; details about her business (such as its name, city, category, website or social links); and your reason for nominating her.
Contact messages
Your name, email address, the topic you choose, and whatever you write in your message.
Founder interviews
If you are invited to be featured, we collect your interview answers, the photos you upload, and your consent to publication, along with the time you gave it. Interview links are private and unique to you.
Server logs
Like most websites, our server automatically logs requests, which include your IP address, the page requested, the date and time, the referring page, and your browser’s user agent. We use these logs to keep the site running, fix errors and prevent abuse.
2. How we use it
- To send the newsletter you signed up for, and to tailor it by city or role where you’ve told us.
- To review nominations, contact nominees, and research, write, edit and publish features.
- To reply to your messages.
- To keep the site secure, detect spam and abuse, and fix problems.
- To keep a record of consent where the law expects one.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with anyone for their own marketing.
3. Third parties
Some parts of our pages are loaded directly from other services. When your browser loads them, those services receive your IP address and basic browser information, and handle it under their own privacy policies:
- OpenStreetMap provides the map tiles in our directory.
- Unsplash hosts some of the photography on the site.
- Google Fonts serves the typefaces used on the site.
We may also share information when the law requires it, to protect the rights or safety of our readers, founders or ourselves, or as part of a merger or sale of the publication (in which case this policy would continue to apply to your information).
4. Analytics and advertising
With your permission, we use Google Analytics to understand how readers use the site: which stories are read, how people find us, and roughly where in the world they are. It sets a few cookies (named _ga) and sends usage data to Google. IP addresses are anonymised, and advertising features are turned off.
Nothing from Google loads until you press “Accept” on the cookie banner. If you press “Decline”, no analytics cookies are set. You can change your mind at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.
We don’t use advertising networks or tracking pixels, and we never sell your information.
5. Storage and security
The information described here is stored in a MySQL database on our own server, located in the United States. Access is limited to the people who run the publication. We use reasonable safeguards, including encrypted connections to the site, but no system is perfectly secure, and we can’t guarantee the security of information sent over the internet.
6. How long we keep it
- Newsletter: while you’re subscribed. After you unsubscribe, we keep your email address and the unsubscribe record so that we don’t email you again.
- Nominations and contact messages: as long as they are useful for our editorial work or for answering you, and then we delete them.
- Founder interviews: answers, photos and consent records are kept for as long as the feature is published, and for a reasonable period afterwards as a record of what was approved.
- Server logs: for a limited period, typically no more than 90 days, unless we need them to investigate a security problem.
7. Your choices and requests
You can ask us to show you the personal information we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. Email [email protected] from the address you used with us, tell us what you’d like, and we’ll respond within 30 days. We may need to confirm your identity first.
If you were nominated and don’t want to be contacted or featured, tell us and we’ll delete the nomination. If you’re a featured founder and want something changed or taken down, write to us and we’ll work with you on it.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under your state’s privacy law. We’ll honor those requests in line with the applicable law.
8. Email and CAN-SPAM
We send the newsletter only to people who signed up for it. Every issue identifies us as the sender, includes a working unsubscribe link, and includes our physical mailing address. We process unsubscribe requests promptly, and within 10 business days at most. You can also unsubscribe by emailing [email protected].
Emails about a nomination, interview or message you sent us are transactional, and may continue while that conversation is open.
9. Children’s privacy
Mama’s Makin’ Moves is written for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Many of the women we feature are mothers, and their stories naturally involve family. Our interview asks founders not to share their children’s names, and we don’t publish them.
10. Changes to this policy
We’ll update this page when our practices change, and revise the “Last updated” date above. If a change is significant, such as adding analytics or advertising, we’ll say so on the site or in the newsletter before it takes effect.
11. Contact us
